Arkive Hits the Labs: Advancing Circularity in the Beauty Industry 🧪

We are buzzed to announce the initiation of a pioneering research project focused on enhancing circularity in the beauty industry. This project marks a significant step in our commitment to sustainable innovation and involves a comprehensive approach to managing cosmetic waste.

OVERVIEW

Under the supervision of Arkive and Open Kitchen Labs, our research team, including leading experts Joanne Nijland (cosmetic scientist) and Maxime Bouillon (PhD researcher in supply chains and sustainability), will undertake a detailed study to divert oils and alcohol from cosmetic waste streams. This initiative is groundbreaking, as it addresses a critical gap in the industry: no other entity is currently focused on this specific aspect of circularity.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

Our primary objective is to analyze both the technical and economic feasibility of separating these components from waste. By identifying and developing partnerships with ecosystem stakeholders through our portal, we aim to integrate these materials into a circular system. This process involves:

  1. DIVERTING WASTE: Isolating oils and alcohol from cosmetic waste to prevent them from ending up in landfills or incinerators.

  2. PARTNER COLLABORATIONS: Engaging with ecosystem partners to ensure these separated materials can be effectively processed and utilized within a circular economy framework.

  3. GAS PRODUCTION POTENTIAL: Exploring opportunities to sell the processed waste to gas production companies, such as BP and/or Wijk & Olthuis, for conversion into energy. This step represents a crucial aspect of making circularity economically viable and impactful.

INNOVATIVE IMPACT

This research represents a significant innovation in the cosmetic industry, as it aims to establish a new model for waste management and resource recovery. By assessing the feasibility of these processes, we are working to set new standards for sustainability and circularity in the beauty sector.

FUTURE OUTLOOK

The results of this research will be released next year, providing valuable insights into the practical implementation of circular practices within the industry. Stay tuned for updates as we continue to push the boundaries of sustainable beauty and circular economy.
